Mission Statement
Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County provides responsible families in need, the life changing opportunity to purchase their own home. Through the cooperative efforts of volunteers, partner families, donors, and staff, and through the education and home ownership programs offered to its partner families, Habitat for Humanity reaches out from its faith-based roots to build successful home ownership experiences through the construction of decent, affordable homes and communities in which people can live and grow.

Our History:
Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County is an ecumenical Christian organization that is an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. In 1994, a small group of citizens created a wave of community support through a brief presentation about the incredible need for affordable housing in our area. A hat was passed among the audience and quickly filled with donations, with our official affiliate status as Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County awarded in early 1995.

Since that initial out pouring of community support we have built a total of 34 houses, providing a stable, secure home environment for 106 individuals comprised of 45 adults and 61 children. These families are now able to live in a home knowing their housing costs are fixed, providing them with the opportunity to improve their overall financial situation and begin to break the cycle of poverty that has kept them struggling for many years.

Our Program:
We build homes in partnership with volunteers and future homeowners.  Completed houses are sold to these very low income families who evidence a willingness to partner with a commitment to their long-term stability.

Our program is more than just providing an opportunity to purchase a house, it is providing a new way of living that spreads throughout our community and, in turn, takes our area from hopelessness and despair to one of vibrancy and joy.

A recent HFHLPC homeowner says “I’m more organized; bills are paid on time and paid up. People tell me I’m glowing with pride, my confidence level has increased and I don’t feel people are looking at me like I’m different. I was already working on healthier habits but having my home with a nice kitchen means I cook better meals and I have a nice neighborhood where I can walk. Owning a home has given me the confidence and ability to expand my goals.”
