HOMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS WARMS MANY HEARTS
On a chilly mid-December Saturday, Habitat for Humanity partner families were joined by friends, family, volunteers, staff and the head clergy of several Durango churches to witness the Home Dedication ceremony. Habitat for Humanity, which is a Christian ministry, holds a home dedication ceremony for each home that it builds and invites the community to celebrate together, the home blessings that are performed with the families. This year's celebration included a potluck feast following the ceremony. The dedication began with a prayer from Father Andrew Cooley of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. All of the Partner Families were introduced and they came on stage. Remarks were given by Laura Shelton (HFHLPC Board President), Connie Imig (HFHLPC Executive Director), and Al Horton (regional Thrivent Builds Specialist). Al came all the way down from Denver to the celebration and was delighted at the progress of the homes; on his previous visit the foundations were just being poured. Jessica Leggett beautifully sang Bless this House. The clergy who blessed the houses were introduced and Pastor John Knutson of Christ the King Lutheran presented each family with a Bible while Pastor Jeff Huber gave the partner families a candle to shine God's light in the house as well as a gift card to Linens-N-Things. Board members Laura Shelton, Laura Pickering, Gene Fisher and Leanna Jaworsky presented each family with a Christmas wreath to help them celebrate the holidays upon becoming new home owners. After all this giving the families each thanked everyone for all the help and support they had received. The entire crowd sang Silent Night and it was highlighted by Jess Stordahl and Jessica Leggett each singing a solo verse. A closing prayer was given by Pastor Jeff Huber of the First United Methodist Church. Immediately following the ceremony everyone headed for the tables piled high with delicious potlucked food and inside into the warmth of what will soon be the Campbell Family's new home. We are very grateful for the generous donations of South City Market, North City Market and Nature's Oasis as well as Mr. Barkley and the City of Durango for their support of the dedication.
