New Construction, Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI) & Green Building Practices

The homes built by HFHLPC are ENERGY STAR® Certified, meeting or exceeding federally-set standards for energy efficiency from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s program for ENERGY STAR-Qualified Homes. In addition to the green building practices to which our construction crew adheres during the build process, the result are homes that provide many long-term benefits to the homeowner:

      - Greater energy efficiency and less pollution
      - Healthier indoor air through the use of low VOC paints, finishes and adhesives
      - Upgraded building and insulated building shell, including insulated foundation
      - Low-flow plumbing features means reduced water usage
      - Energy efficient appliances and features mean lower ownership costs
      - Passive solar systems on the last four homes built by HFHLPC
      - Xeriscape landscaping
      - Waste management and recycling of materials during the build process

Habitat programs across the globe have been expanding their menu of programs and services. This makes it possible for local Habitat affiliates to be more flexible and responsive in meeting the needs of the communities they serve.

In the United States, Habitat for Humanity International has launched the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative. Through NRI, affiliates are able to provide a more comprehensive array of services and programs:

- Construction of new, energy-efficient homes.
- Acquisition and rehabilitation of foreclosed and abandoned homes.
- Critical repairs to homes currently owned and occupied by low-income families.
- Performing exterior repair and maintenance through A Brush With Kindness.
- Energy improvements and weatherization services.
- Homeownership education, counseling and policy advocacy.

Through this expanded set of services, Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County is able to tailor its program to more effectively meet the needs of the community it serves.
